Dioscorea elephantipes
The turtle plant
The Dioscorea elephantipes plants are exceptionally bizarre in their growth.
The trunk, also called Kaudex gets with age a cracked structure, which is very reminiscent of a turtle shell. Hence the name turtle plant.
The yam root
Dioscorea elephantipes or yam root, both are correct.
This plant is a survivalist, in times of drought, it withdraws all its water reserves in the Kaudex, and then expel new leaves in the rain.
Of course, this only happens in the savannah or desert.
She can stand sun very well.
Waterlogging is definitely to be avoided.
These plants are absolute collector's items and therefore not mass produced.
